Kmart in the 70s & 80s - Why We LOVED IT
A return to the Kmart of the 1970s that we all loved.
Before the days of "Super Kmarts" and "Big Ks," there was just Kmart.
The first Kmart was opened in 1962, and by the mid-1970s, we were all shopping there.
Revisit the days of Blue Light Specials, Kmart Cafeterias, and random wood-veneered merchandise scattered in aisles throughout the store.
MAKE SURE to stick around for the musical montage featuring two unforgettable K-mart jingles complete with in-store announcements.
Thanks for watching The History Lounge!

    You completely chalk up the failure of Sears to “making wrong decisions”… lazy much? It was Venture Capitalists (also known as Vulture Capitalism) that destroyed (and are destroying) Sears and MANY of the retail giants in this country. Stop pretending it was just “bad decision making” instead of greed that sucked the life out of this giant.

    Aviation changed, shopping changed. Everything changed. Society worldwide is spiralling down into an abyss. I am 47 and have seen both the East and the West. It might sound a bit extreme but societies across the world now seem to be bereft of manners and compassion leading to nasty behaviors all the time. That's why I don't talk to most now. I can still text or talk with like-minded folks a lot. Yahoo Messenger is something I miss a lot. I believe we need to create a group of like-minded folks somewhere online. Texting or talking to nice folks surely helps in taking some stress off the shoulders. I would highly appreciate replies. Thank you.

      You’re probably around my age. Much like the sky high signs that made us want to pull in the parking lot, There was just something about the big bright storefront signs that just made us feel so welcome, and anxious to go inside to our favorite departments. They were obviously designed to have that effect on people, but it worked and did positively add to the experience and memories.

    My husband and I worked at Kmart and there were two major things that contributed to its demise, that were constant complaints of the employees. First Walmart loved moving in right next to Kmart, they did in my town. When a Kmart would close, Walmart would throw a party to celebrate. Two, that idiot billionaire, Edward Lampert, did them and Sears in. He had no idea what made businesses successful and made the dumbest cuts, which actually lost the company more money. As soon as employees started qualifying for pay increases or benefits, he would have management cut their hours to the point they would give up and quit. Then every couple of months were hiring groups of 10 or more fresh bodies at minimum wage. He didn’t realize you lose more money training all those employees. Towards the end were were working on practically skeleton crews. One night I had to run soft lines, hard lines, and register, because there were three of us working in the whole store and one was still in training and didn’t have register access! I asked my boss how am I supposed to get a price check when I’m the one supposed to be doing the price checks! It was a nightmare, and I was only there 2 months! They closed a few years later. Such a shame.

    • @TheHistoryLounge
      @TheHistoryLounge 6 часов назад

      Thanks for sharing your insider’s view here. From what I’ve learned, it sounds like Ed Lampert was just there to squeeze out what he could from Kmart and Sears, and probably never had any real intentions of reinvesting in and revitalizing either of the brands. It’s a sad thing for all the people who loved those stores and especially unfair to people like you and your husband who committed your careers to those companies.

    I worked full-time at the local Kmart for a couple of years in the mid 90s. All the full-time employees knew that Kmart was heading for bankruptcy even back then. The biggest problem was corporate, basically everyone from the district manager level and up. Corporate would roll out some new program, only to kill it in a few months. The one I remember most was a Big Deal™, so big that they had all the full-time employees come in on Easter to have a meeting in the garden center to tell us about it. (At the time Kmart, like most stores, was closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.) It was actually quite a good plan, with the keystone being an employee whose whole job was to wander around the store looking for customers that needed assistance and giving them that assistance. The employee had a binder full of pretty much everything they could possibly need to help customers out. Customers _loved it_ and it was increasing sales. But then corporate cut payroll at all stores a few months later, forcing stores to get rid of the roving assistance employee, killing off the new program entirely in under six months. It was a shame, Kmart deserved better (and actually competent) management. I enjoyed my time there, the other full-time employees were all nice people and we got along well. I really liked the K-note system which you could earn for doing things above and beyond the baseline. I ended up with around $100 worth of gift certificates from those!
